As part of the architectural restoration of the Museo del Duomo di Modena, a new multimedia experience was designed with the aim of creating an engaging narrative accessible to a broad and diverse audience, from school groups to older visitors. The project sought to give life to an accessible and immersive environment and learning experience, while ensuring that the museum remains an inclusive and immersive cultural space.

Interactivity played a key role throughout the project. For younger visitors, it acts as a catalyst for attention and curiosity, allowing them to engage with educational content through familiar languages. At the same time, it serves as an opportunity for older visitors to explore non-traditional tools in a museum setting - a new and stimulating approach to historical storytelling.

Located within the complex adjacent to the cathedral, the museum unfolds across five rooms, each narrating a different chapter in the history of Modena’s Romanesque Duomo and the Ghirlandina Tower. The journey starts from the cathedral's origins, marked by the construction of a monumental medieval worksite in the 11th century, to its recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997.

The production and design process of the experience, carried out in collaboration with architects and curators, focused on achieving the right balance between tradition and innovation, physical artifacts and intangible digital experiences. Given the museum’s historical focus, special attention was placed on integrating digital installations in a way that felt organic and respectful of the past tradition. Whenever possible, interactions were designed to move beyond conventional touchscreen interfaces, incorporating various gestures and “phygital” elements that reintroduced materiality into the visitor experience.

The project resulted in a dynamic dialogue between historical artifacts and digital screens, offering visitors multiple layers of discovery they can choose to engage with during the visit. The visual design of the multimedia interfaces embraces a refined, minimalist aesthetic, with a color palette that echoes the natural hues of stone and the architectural materials found within the site. This thoughtful integration ensures that technology enhances, rather than disrupts, the museum's historical and architectural essence.
