N
Overview

N is one of the pioneering works developed by the studio. First unveiled in 2010, it was first presented as an immersive mapping installation. Since then, it has organically evolved through successive iterations and mediums, foreshadowing key themes and techniques that have since become integral to the studio’s artistic practice.

At the core of N lies a fascination with the governing principles of nature - the meticulous precision through which natural and physical laws shape the world around us. N arose from an intense curiosity to explore, interpret, and visually represent these laws, aiming to simulate their processes and evoke in the viewer the sensation of encountering a living organism.

Rooted in the pursuit of visual experimentation, N revolves around the concept of an interconnected network. Visually, it focuses on the representation of a net of lines intricately interwoven with one another. The simple shape is continually pushed to its limits by rough forces and movements, imbuing the structure with dynamic energy.

At the time of the development of N, the studio was still in its early days and audiovisual experimentations were what motivated our work. Improvising with reactive systems, N was initially born as an experiment which, in retrospect, laid the groundwork for the development of skills and interests that continue to inform our current practice.

One of these elements is the development of N as a real-time piece, where the motions and distortions of the net are influenced by data simultaneously collected from the surrounding environment. N served as a platform for experimenting freely and finding innovative ways of connecting visuals, audio and the environment - a theme that also resonates in our most recent works, like Mimesis (2020) and Trust (2022). Just like in its successors, N also wants to highlight the interconnectedness of different elements, offering novel perspectives on the world.

Another pivotal moment connected to the work was the introduction of a performer in the scene, interacting with the visuals. This gave life to the live media performance N 4.0. The transition occurred organically and unexpectedly, yet it paved the way for extensive research into the relationship between body, technology and movement - an exploration that would come to define our studio in the years to come. N4 ignited a newfound curiosity for performative projects, and served as a gateway for the research that would later culminate in Ljós (2014).
